Feel Like An Imposter? – Here’s 10 Things To Remember

…if you do, I’ve got 10 things for you.

1 – You might feel like the only one, but you’re not alone. – A lot of people in the creative space, even some that are well-established, feel like they’ll be found out one day and have to hand everything back.

2 – You’ve got low self-esteem. – According to the great Randy Gage the feeling that you’re an imposter means that you value other people’s work over your own and think that yours isn’t as deserving of credit.

3 – You’re always going to be second to the party. – Unless you’ve got a time machine and can go back to before the first fiction book was written, song sung, movie written, or TV show made, you’re always going to be second to the party.

4 – People may copy you. – When we think of being an imposter we always look forward to all the people that have done what we’ve done, and yet never look backwards at those just starting their journey.  – So someone behind you might see you as the original and like being an imposter of you.

5 – There’s always room for improvement. – Just because someone else is doing what you do, don’t assume they’re the best at it or that it can’t be improved.  Things can always be better and you might the one to prove it.

6 – You are the unique ingredient in the mix. – No matter how close you think you are to copying someone else, you can’t be them as much as they can’t be you.  You’re always going to have different thoughts, ideas, strengths and weaknesses, than that other person so the baked cake will always be different.

7 – You’re not good enough yet. – When you’re not good enough at what you do, it’s easy to fall into the trap that you’re an imposter because everyone else is doing it better than you.  Focus on improving and doing it the best that you can and those feelings will lessen.

8 – People offline don’t worry about it. – Take a walk down the main street of your town and I’m sure you’ll find more than one coffee shop, barber, nail bar, appliance store, and church all competing for the same people. You’ll never find them questioning themselves as to whether they’re an imposter or not. They just try and provide the best service to stand out and so should you.

9 – There’s a difference between being an imposter and a copycat. – Sometimes we feel that being an imposter means we’re a copycat, but it doesn’t. Unless you’re copying them word for word, action for action, and stealing their ideas and claiming them as your own, then you’re not a copycat. Being an imposter is a mindset issue, rather than anything you physically do or say.

10 – It’s good to feel like an imposter. – Feeling like an imposter means that you always question your ability and always feel like you can be better. Those are good qualities to have. Those that don’t feel that way, rarely push themselves to improve. Imposters are always more humble and appreciative of any success that they get. – Even though sometimes they think they don’t deserve it and that it’ll take taken from them. –

In a nutshell, imposters are nicer people to be around. They’re not big-headed, always doubt themselves, and work to be better than they are.

Will you ever shake the feeling of being an imposter? – Probably not. But if you do, you just might lose the edge you once had.

Be you, and do the work only you can do. That’s all that we want from you.
