I got an email the other day that made me stop in my tracks.
What did it say?
“Barry, we’re halfway through the year right now, are you any closer to that goal you made on January 1?”
Now for many of us that hangover at the start of the year is long gone in the past, but is your goal there too?
Has it long been swept away, tossed out with the party stuff? Maybe put away with the Christmas decorations only to be taken out, dusted down, and hung up for the New Year?
So I’ll ask you the question, how’s your goal going?
Have you put that 10 pounds you want to lose to bed?
Have you started that fiction book you’ve always promised you’d write?
Have you taken the massive action you said you would?
Have you challenged yourself by doing something you haven’t tried before?
If you haven’t, then all those goals have been ‘should’ powered and not ‘must’ powered.
Thing is, you’ve probably even said that out loud to yourself.
‘I should start exercising.’
‘I should start that book.’
‘I should find someone that’ll help me.’
‘I should get off my butt and make a few coloring pages today.’
Unfortunately, shoulds are easily stopped in their tracks with anyone of the following…
‘Tomorrow, definitely tomorrow…’
‘I just need to buy another book on writing…’
‘But I don’t know anyone that could teach me…’
‘I should do it, but I’ve got to watch the conclusion to this boxset….’
‘Musts’ however don’t settle for the bull you’ve been telling yourself.
They don’t give you any get-out clause.
They don’t care if you’ve never done it before.
They don’t care if you’re shaking in your breeches because you don’t know what you’re doing.
They don’t care about anything, but getting what you said you’d do and getting it done.
When you must do something you always find the time, the energy, the money to do what needs to be done. Everything else is just noise in the background.
A few of you told me in the survey that motivation and time management are holding you back.
When your shoulds become musts, you don’t need to find the motivation or free time. It’s always been there.
You know what you need to do and you show up to do it. Come rain, shine, or snowstorm, if you need to do it you’re there. What the rest of the world’s doing doesn’t matter.
Because let’s face it, the rest of the world is doing sod all with their time and talents. And that’s why this January 1st will come and they’ll always be no further ahead.
Set a higher standard for yourself.
PS – You’ve still got six months of this year left to stop pussy footing around. – Make them count.
